5/12/2023 0 Comments Catching the sun tony parsonsThe most gripping part of the book involves the Tsunami of 2004 it took a while to get there (at least 100 pages) but as the events unfolded, I was hooked. The plot has a easy pace that allows you to relax at the end of a hard day to the depiction of a beautiful Thai sunset. Unfortunately, after reading it I found I liked it, but it didn’t give me that great book rush.Ĭatching the Sun is a very ‘comfortable’, even somewhat un-challenging book to read. I really wanted to love this book, like really love it – the cover is beautiful and I had gotten raving reviews from a good friend. "Joanna Shupe is the queen of historical bad boys!" - Julia Quinnīy beloved USA Today bestselling author Joanna Shupe, the third installment in the Fifth Avenue Rebels series about an arranged engagement destined for disaster. This was my grandmother’s gift to me - from her large collection of 1920’s children’s books - that long lost summer so long ago. So there I was, in her room, as the late afternoon summer sun filtered through the Navajo hemp curtains, deeply and fatally immersed in the far-flung exploits of this young heroic man, Michel Strogoff, Courier to the Czar! This same room had always traditionally doubled as a nursery, so my kid sister was relocated to my parents’ room for the duration. She could sense that deeply and profoundly. My grandmother always took the spare room when she came - not actually much of a big deal for the First Lady of Tooele, Utah - the mayor’s wife!īut our enormous love for her made up for it. My dear grandmother had come all the way from Utah, by train, to see us all - and especially her baby granddaughter, my sister, who’d been born in the previous October. well, this less of a review than a series of rambling reminiscences -Ī wonderful illustrated version of a fantastic odd-book-out odyssey by that idol of our long-forgotten childhoods, Jules Verne. I’ll have to beg my readers’ forgiveness once again, for this. 5/10/2023 0 Comments The arabic quiltThis is a great book, and even though I have read a lot of different picture books about immigrant children adjusting to lives in a new school, this is already one of my new favorites. I knew that 'sofa' and 'zero' came from Arabic, but I wasn't aware of the others, and found this very interesting. There is a glossary in the back, and the book also mentions some English words which were derived from Arabic. This book is a great choice for schools because of its classroom setting, and families with multicultural backgrounds or interest in learning about other cultural experiences will greatly enjoy this.Īnother thing I admire about this book is how well the author incorporates Arabic words into the story without making it difficult for someone who is unfamiliar with the language to read the book aloud. This story is based on the author's experiences as a child, and she convincingly resolves the narrative conflict without making it saccharine or unbelievable. The text and illustrations are both incredibly appealing, and the story of an Egyptian-American girl learning to accept her bilingual, multicultural identity is authentic and moving. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Shoe dog pdfHi, By now you are probably aware that Shoe Dog PDF is an autobiography by the co-founder and chairman of Nike. We learn that the North Pole is an actual physical pole that gets broken a couple of times, that the Northern Lights have to be turned on, and there is a tap that does this (North Polar Bear turns it on too hard once, using up two years worth of northern lights). They came in envelopes with polar stamps (also designed by Tolkien) and, over time, created a little world of magical creatures at the North Pole, including Father Christmas, the North Polar Bear, his North Polar Cub nephews, Paksu and Valkotukka, elves, gnomes, reindeer, and goblins. They arrived by various means – sometimes the postman would bring them, sometimes they would just appear in the house. (What a great dad Tolkien must have been, with so much care and effort put into this annual gift for his children.) the letters Of course it is traditional in many countries for children to write letters to Father Christmas, but Tolkien’s children were lucky enough to receive letters back. “The Father Christmas Letters” is a collection of letters and accompanying pictures written by JRR Tolkien for his children. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Make room for ducklings bookWe have actually already started on them!
